About Hokutō Dōjō

Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu Kōdōkai is a self-defense oriented jūjutsu system incorporating grappling, joint locking, throws, and arresting techniques with an emphasis on the practical application of aiki. According to oral history this art was founded by Minamoto Yoshimitsu in the 11th century with origins dating back to Emperor Seiwa in the 9th century. Daitō-ryū was spread prolificlly in the late 19th century and early 20th century by Takeda Sokaku with an emphasis on teaching military and police. Daitō-ryū was formative in the development of modern jūjutsu based schools including Aikidō, Jūdō, and Hapkido.

Ono-ha Ittō-ryū Hyōhō is a school of Japanese kenjutsu and strategy that was founded by Itō Ittōsai in the 16th century based around the core technique kiri-otoshi. Classes are focused on paired practice with bokken using Ittō-ryū’s characteristic protective gauntlets called onigote. Due to it success Ittō-ryū spread extensively throughout Japan during the Edo period creating many branches of the school throughout Japan. Ono-ha Ittō-ryū was formative in the development of modern Kendō and offers a comprehensive swordsmanship curriculum.
